Die Insel Hvar liegt nur zwei Stunden Fährenfahrt entfernt von der Stadt Split. Der größte und beliebteste Ort der Insel ist sicher die gleichnamige Stadt Hvar. Von der historischen Perspektive aus betrachtet, war die Stadt Hvar früher einer der wichtigsten Häfen unter der Venezianischen Republik. Deshalb auch die prachtvollen, öffentlichen Gebäude und großen Stadtplätze als Hinterlassenschaften dieser Zeit des allgemeinen Wohlstandes.
Die Fähre aus Split legt im Hafen der Stadt Stari Grad an und von dort kommt man mit dem Bus nach einer Fahrt von 20 Minuten in die Stadt Hvar. Natürlich besuchen viele Gäste die Insel auch mit ihren Yachten. Die Insel lebt heute überwiegend vom Tourismus und der Landwirtschaft.
